An annual competition sponsored in part by the Brooklyn Public Library is helping to promote the development of locally-grown businesses. NY1's Asa Aarons filed the following Employment Report.

There's something in the air at the Brooklyn Public Library and it just might be the sweet smell of success.

Every year, the library's business center joins forces with the Citi Foundation to award more than $25,000 to Brooklyn entrepreneurs.

In this power up program, the business model is important as is the winners' commitment to the borough.

"They have a dream of the type of business they would like to start. Frequently, they employ other people. But most importantly they really are contributing to their own success and to that of the community," said Maud Andrew Quintana of the Brooklyn Public Library.

The first winner seven years ago now employs 35 people. And this year's winner of the $15,000 grand prize has similar plans.

Stacey Toussaint of Inside Out Tours says she plans to expand the number of tours her company conducts of Brooklyn cultural hot spots.

"With the prize money that we've won we will focus on hiring sales and tourism staff and also just really going out there and selling our product," Toussaint said.

The two runners up received $5,000 each to develop their businesses.

Evelyn Oliver says she will use the money to expand her organic Bed-Stuy grocery store.

"The first year we're hoping to hire two employees and as the business progresses we hope to hire more. And within our second year we will provide a full health care package to our employees," Oliver said.

The other $5,000 winner is Vandra Thorbum, whose Vokashi Kitchen Waste System makes discarded food compost-ready with a quick, totally odorless fermentation process.

The Brooklyn Public Library and Citi Foundation conduct the Power Up business search each year.

For those looking to get a jump start on a business of their own, the next contest begins in March.

All it takes is an air-tight bucket filled with wheat bran, molasses and a few safe ingredients with microorganisms that ferment food.

That’s basically Vandra Thorburn’s plan for her new business, Vokashi Kitchen Waste, which she now hopes to aggressively market with $10,000 in prizes she’ll be getting through the Brooklyn Public Library.

The Clinton Hill woman finished second in the Library’s sixth annual “PowerUP!: Your Business Starts Here” competition, which rewards the entrepreneurial spirit of Brooklynites.

Thorburn and other winners were announced last night during a gala ceremony at the Library’s Grand Army Plaza facility.

Thorburn said her method is to ferment food debris in an air-tight container. Once the composted matter is matured, it can be used in gardens.

Vokashi, Thorburn says, will pickup and deliver the five-gallon buckets, and then plant the waste in community gardens or in special lots being developed to produce urban organic top soil.

She is targeting residences and small catering companies. Homes with one customer would be charged $40 a month and houses with two or more would shell out $25 a month.

Catering businesses would negotiate a price, although Thorburn currently charges caterers roughly $400 a month.

Thorburn won $5,000 in cash plus business-assistance services worth $5,000, such as membership in the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and free ads in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

Anyone interested in Vokashi can call 718-623-1911 or visit the Web site at vokashi.com.

The $15,000 cash grand prize went to Stacey Toussaint of Clinton Hill and Sheila Collins of Prospect Heights, who are opening a Brooklyn walking- and bus-tour company. They will also be getting $5,000 in start-up services for their ” Inside Out Tours,” which gives visitors an intimate look at the artistic, social and cultural diversity of the borough.

Prices run from $30 for a walking tour and $68-96 per person, including food, for a four-hour bus tour. The themed tours, offered April to October, include visits to DUMBO’s breathtaking waterfront, popular eateries, historic churches and stops along the Civil War era Underground Railroad.

Sponsored by Citi Foundation, the contest is open to eligible applicants whose businesses require start-up capital.

Two Brooklyn women with plans for a sight-seeing tour captured the Brooklyn Library’s sixth annual PowerUp! competition, a contest between budding entrepreneurs that featured ideas on everything from an organic grocery to clothing stores for plus-size women.

Stacey Toussaint and Sheila Collins won the grand prize of $15,000 for their plans to start Inside Out Tours, which launches later this year. The innovative tour company will run various off-the-beaten-path food and culture tours around the borough.

“We want to bring tourist dollars into communities in Brooklyn,” said Collins.

The prize money will come in handy. Collins said she and her business partner had trouble securing loans for the project, which they estimated has a start-up cost of roughly $50,000. With the library grant, she said, finding other funding should be easier.

“We needed this,” Collins said. “This is really going to help us get to the next level.”

Starting this spring Inside Out Tours will offer tourists from Manhattan and elsewhere around the world a multi-ethnic tasting tour of different ethnic neighborhoods.

Included will be stops to Chinese and Latin American restaurants in Sunset Park, Middle Eastern fare in Boerum Hill, and African-American cuisine in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, said Toussaint.

The company will also run an Afro-Caribbean Experience tour, and its co-founders have plans to expand by providing customized educational tours for schools and other groups focusing on specific historical themes, such as the Civil War.

Toussaint said a personal touch and interactive format would distinguish their tour company from others around the city. The tours will stop often so visitors can meet local artists and shop owners, she said.

“It's an opportunity for [people] to see parts of Brooklyn they maybe didn’t know existed,” said Toussaint, who grew up in Clinton Hill. Collins hails from Prospect Heights. The two enterprising Brooklynites are childhood friends.

They received an honorable mention in last year’s PowerUp! contest, which awards a total of $25,000 to ten contestants planning to open a small business in Brooklyn.

The contest is funded by the Citi Foundation, and has awarded over $125,000 to date.

To participate, contestants must live in Brooklyn, have plans to start a small business, and attend a series of orientation seminars that take place each year in March and April, said Maud Andrews, of the Business Library at the Brooklyn Public Library.

Throughout the contest period, contestants meet with business counselors, financial planners, and others to solidify their business proposals.

Andrews said the library does not monitor winners to ensure they spend their winnings on their planned-for small business, though more than half eventually go on to realize their goal. If they can get through the rigorous competition, Andrew said, chances are good they have the wherewithal to implement their plans.

“The idea is to really help people get going with something sustainable for themselves,” Andrews said. “Most people looking for quick money drop out [of the competition]” she said, after realizing all the hard planning work it requires.

PowerUp! gave also gave out two second place prizes of $5,000 each and smaller sums to six runners up.

The second place finishers were Vandra Thorburn, who plans to open a food recycling firm called Vokashi Kitchen Waste in Prospect Heights, and Evelyn Oliver and Darell Brown, who will launch Organic Bed-Stuy, an organic grocery store.

The family-friendly walking and bus tours provide insight to Brooklyn neighborhoods while a percent of the profits are donated to food-based charities in New York City. “There is a creative energy in Brooklyn that comes from the mixtures of its people, their pride in their culture, and their tenacious spirit. Brooklyn is a huge artistic center of the city and is home to many of the city’s best restaurants that serve delicious local cuisine,“ says Toussaint.

Toussaint and Collins handcrafted the tours to encompass all that Brooklyn has to offer. “The Multi-Ethnic Tasting Tour and Treasure Hunt Tour” leads participants to diverse, and often unknown, ethnic restaurants in Brooklyn where they can literally taste the culture. Tour participants taste an array of food from soul food staples like sweet potatoes and collard greens to Mexican Tres Leches cake.

The Multi-Ethnic Tasting Tour is a great way to entertain kids while adults admire artistic galleries throughout Brooklyn. At each destination participants receive a clue or challenge in order to move forward, and at the final destination the winner receives a prize. The tour provides insight to the Brooklyn’s culture and the company supports local charities and cultural centers with donations and partnerships. “We believe that you can do well, while doing good. Not only will you have have a fabulous time on our tours and eat great food but you will also know that you are doing something to make the world a better place,” says Toussaint.

A business that created a win-win situation became the big winner itself in taking the Brooklyn Public Library’s top prize in their 6th annual PowerUP! competition.

Stacey Toussaint and Sheila Collins nabbed the $15,000 grant top prize for their Inside Out Tours business whose mission is to bring tourist dollars to local communities, as well as to introduce visitors and residents alike to the history and vitality of Brooklyn.

The PowerUP! competition rewards the entrepreneurial spirit of Brooklynites with the best business plans.

Although Toussaint and Collins live in Prospect Heights and Clinton Hill, their business is currently based out of Park Slope’s Brooklyn Creative League, 540 President Street.

Its premise is to offer cultural walking and bus tours of Brooklyn designed to give visitors an intimate look at the artistic, social and cultural diversity of the borough.

“We take you off the beaten path where you meet the locals, learn about the culture and taste the food, and because we’re natives of Brooklyn, we’re able to offer that,” explained Toussaint.

Toussaint said they will focus on four tours starting with a multi-ethnic tasting tour where participants will visit such places as Little China along 8th Avenue in Sunset Park and Little Latin America also in Sunset Park as well as other neighborhoods that feature ethnic cuisine.

Other tours include a Brooklyn Gospel Tour where visitors will go to the various churches in the borough and learn about their rich history, a Brooklyn After Dark Tour, where visitors will get to see some of the cultural institutions such as BAM and other nightlife, and an Afro-Caribbean Tour where visitors will go to such neighborhoods as Bedford-Stuyvesant, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

The two second-place winners, earning $5,000 grants each, went to Vandra Thorburn’s Vokashi Kitchen Waste business and Evelyn Oliver and Darell Brown’s Organic Bed-Stuy business.

Vokashi Kitchen Waste involves recycling and disposing of kitchen refuse through a bran product that quickly ferments discarded food and distributes it to composting sites where it becomes organic soil.

Three Brooklyn entrepreneurs took home more than $25,000 last week, as the Brooklyn Public Library announced the winners in its Sixth Annual PowerUp! business plan competition.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said at the BPL’s Business Library event, “112 is the zip that’s hip.”

The three Power Up! winners a program that celebrates and rewards the entrepreneurial spirit of Brooklynites and enhances the vitality of the local business community.

The Winners

The Grand Prize ($15,000) went to Inside Out Tours, with Stacey Toussaint and Sheila Collins proprietors (Prospect Heights 11238). Inside Out Tours will offer “off the beaten path” cultural walking and bus tours of Brooklyn designed to give visitors an intimate look at the artistic, social and cultural diversity of the borough. The company’s mission is to bring tourist dollars to local communities, as well as to introduce visitors and residents alike to the history and vitality of Brooklyn.

This firm will give residential households and small catering companies the tools to recycle their food waste — primarily, a product that quickly ferments discarded food and distributes it to composting sites where it becomes organic soil. The process is natural and easy and sure to appeal to Brooklyn’s eco-friendly residents.

Why sit in traffic on the top deck of a big red tour bus through Times Square when you can take an Afro-Caribbean tour through Bed-Stuy, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill? Borough-natives Stacey Toussaint and Sheila Collins are offering the ethnic tour as one of their Inside Out Tours through Brooklyn. The walking and bus tours highlight some of the borough’s more off-the-beaten-path historical spots and cultural themes. Besides the Afro-Caribbean tour, the pair offers a Brooklyn gospel tour, green tour, Sunset Park ethnic-food-tasting tour, Brooklyn after-dark and, of course, the Hip-Hop tour.

Inside Out Tours just won the top prize and $15,000 from the Brooklyn Public Library’s annual PowerUP! competition for entrepreneurs. The tours ain’t exactly Brokelyn-cheap ($30+), but how many times have you walked by an old brownstone and wondered if it was a stop on the Underground Railroad (or had no idea)? And we really want to know what’s on that after-dark tour.

You can visit Brooklyn, or you can experience it.

That’s the premise of Inside Out Tours, a company specializing in treks to the borough’s often overlooked neighborhoods.

Stacey Toussaint and Sheila Collins, Brooklyn natives, developed walking and bus tours that explore neighborhoods such as Crown Heights, Bensonhurst and Bedford-Stuyvesant. The tours combine samplings of ethnic food and visits to art galleries, Underground Railroad sites and houses of worship.

Last week, Inside Out Tours won first place and $15,000 from the Brooklyn Public Library’s PowerUP! program, a competition to award seed money to promising Brooklyn businesses.

“We felt that people didn’t know about all the treasures Brooklyn has,” Toussaint said. “Our tour takes people off the beaten path. It’s one of our distinguishing factors and we thought that could be a competitive advantage over the big red buses that just go through Brooklyn as a segue.”

The women, both 35, not only know their borough, they know how to get things done.

Toussaint, a securities lawyer, and Collins, a marketing executive, passed the city’s licensed tour guide exam and tapped community resources such as the PowerUP! program.

When the duo rated an honorable mention in the contest last year, they bolstered their business plan. They formed an LLC, created a Web site, and added community partners and a charity tie-in.

In the contest, the judges look for people “keen about their businesses … that are an expression of Brooklyn,” said Maud Andrew, the library’s program manager.

Toussaint said they’ll use the prize money to launch a business-to-business marketing plan, targeting groups such as tour operators, schools and social clubs.
