Great Women of New York Tour
Women have shaped every aspect of the city's growth since before it was founded.
This tour explores the pivotal role women have played in the development of NYC and tells the hidden stories of the female pioneers whose contributions made this city into a great metropolis.
We begin with the story of the matriarchs of the Lenape Indians, the original Native American inhabitants. We then tell the stories of women trailblazers including the only women to start a village in colonial America, the first woman to be injured in fighting during the Revolutionary war, enslaved women, woman suffragist, Wall Street pioneers, religious leaders, ground breaking writers, social justice crusaders, philanthropists, and 9/11 heroes.
“An educational and informative tour. The information was delivered clearly and the tour was well-paced for all those attending. I learned a lot about slavery in the early days of the city, and would strongly recommend this tour to anyone with a thirst for knowledge.”
“It was an excellent tour with … our guide. You really learn about the history of Bronx and get to see really nice local art. Places you probably wouldn’t visit without this tour. .”
“[The Tour Guide] was a perfect guide for this tour. It was fun meeting the business owners and learning the history of the area and best of all getting to taste the food!”
“Completely engaging history of the role of NYC in the slave trade, the perpetuation of slavery and the bravery of the abolitionists and those involved in the underground railroad. Our guide … was knowledgeable, informative and managed to keep us and two children 11&14 fully engaged for 2.5 hours in soggy, cold and blustery weather. The history of the African Burial Ground and the Slave Market gave a tangible insight into the horrors of slavery and ongoing racism/inequality.”
“[The Tour Guide] was our guide for this lengthy and in-depth tour. It was well off the beaten track, and really interesting, with demographic, historical and political insights into the story of street art in Brooklyn, and its place on the world stage. I really came to appreciate the ephemeral nature of the art work, and sure enough, some was found during our tour. My son later spotted some by ‘invader’ in Greenwich Village on a subsequent tour. Really informative, and intelligently presented tour.”
“What a wonderful tour! We learned so many new things, tasted delicious food and had a great time. Our guide, … was full of interesting facts and stories. We felt that we truly experienced life in Little Italy. Everything was on time and well organized. The entire afternoon was a very positive and professional experience. We would definitely recommend this tour and company to others.”
“Very easy to book online (the day before) and great tour guide … . Walked over the Brooklyn Bridge and explored Dumbo. Learnt a lot of interesting history from Matt re the construction of the bridge and the town of Dumbo. I’m not a lover of history but he was very engaging. Walked at a good pace with regular stops and photo opportunities. Very satisfied with this tour and would use this company again.”
“This was an outstanding tour. The tour guide was very enthusiastic and made it very interesting. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit and participation with the church service. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the New York area”
“My daughter and I had a wonderful time with the alternative arts walking tour in Brooklyn. Our tour guide was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable and made me view streets arts in a very new way. We had a plenty of time to take photographs. It was really a neat way of learning more about New York. I also liked that we stopped at a local coffee shop. It was nice to relax a bit, participate in the local economy, and have a chance to sit down. We had two other walkings tours, which were all very good, and wish that there was this component of stopping at a coffee shop at each tour.”
“A no-miss if you want to discover a new aspect of NYC. Our guide, …, was amazing and adapted the tour to our wishes. Thank you.”
